There are many different ways in which the face of modern jobs has changed. For one thing, more and more companies are relying on more enhanced methods of sifting through employees. One way in which companies vet their employees is to require drug testing, in the form of urinalysis, upon employment. If you are going to require that potential employees pass a drug screening, it is important to get good testing equipment. They make over the counter drug tests that have results in a few minutes, but these are not as reliable. If you want more accurate results, it is better to send your results to a lab testing facility, such as Gulfstream Diagnostics. They will be able to determine what drugs your potential employees might be on.
Drug tests are interesting, and their results are not always purely straight-forward. There are lots of different kinds of drug tests, but urinalysis is the most common. Urinalysis involves examining the urine for traces of metabolites that would be given off if certain drugs were ingested recently. This is something that many people do not realize. The drugs themselves are not tested for. Instead, it is the metabolites that result from having metabolized the drug. This means that technically speaking it is only the byproducts of the drug use that you are detecting, almost like how a fossil is only an imprint of a living thing that has been mineralized, rather than the thing itself. While this has nothing to do with the effectiveness of urine drug testing, it is still interesting to note.
While there are many different kinds of drug tests you can get, the most common and basic is known as a five panel test, as it is able to detect the metabolites of only five different types of drugs. That being said, these five main types encompass most of what you would want to look for. These five types of drugs are opiates, amphetamines, benzodiazepines, cocaine and THC. All of them are whole categories of drugs, which are often ingested for recreational purposes, within the United States. Opiates encompass a pretty wide range of drugs from prescription pain killers to heroin. Because there are some people that do take opiates for prescription pain relief, it is important to ask for people’s medications before administering the test. Amphetamines and benzodiazepines, too are used for medical purposes, so be sure to find out if your potential employees have any such prescriptions. In addition to this factor, there are also false positives that can occur, particularly if the person has ingested something that is similar to one of the substances, but not illegal. For example, certain over the counter medications can cause people to fail for a variety of different illegal drugs, in some cases. Because of this, it is important to make note of the levels that were present in the UA testing. This will tell you whether or not it was a false positive, since false positives typically only produce pretty low levels of the metabolite.
